The steps of nuclear decommissioning

The Caorso Nuclear Power Plant was a significant nuclear facility located in Caorso, Italy. Operational from 1981 to 1990, it played a crucial role in Italy’s energy landscape.

The plant featured a single Boiling Water Reactor (BWR 4) with a Mark II Containment structure from General Electric. This reactor had an electrical net output of 860 MW and utilized low-enriched uranium as fuel. The moderation and cooling processes were carried out by normal light water.

As the most modern and largest-capacity nuclear power plant in Italy at the time, Caorso contributed significantly to the country’s power generation capabilities.

However, its operational life was cut short in 1990 following the results of a referendum held in November 1987, which led to the decision to close down the plant.
