Senotherapic Phytocomplex for an “Almost” Eternal Youth

A group of scientists from the University of Padua and the Veneto Institute of Molecular Medicine (VIMM), in collaboration with the Institute of Oncology Research (IOR, affiliated with USI and member of Bios+), have made a significant discovery by identifying a new anti-aging therapy. The study is published in the prestigious journal “Nature Aging”.

The study found that a botanical extract of Salvia haenkei (Haenkenium, HK) can extend lifespan and improve healthspan in mice.

The Context

Aging is a major risk factor for the development of numerous neurodegenerative, muscular, metabolic and tumor diseases. Rather than treating individual diseases or their symptoms, a new paradigm has emerged that aims to directly target the causes of aging, at the cellular and molecular level. Among the possible therapeutic approaches is to specifically target senescent cells.

Cellular senescence is characterized by an irreversible arrest of cell growth, together with the release of inflammatory factors collectively called SASP (senescence-associated secretory phenotype) that contribute to age-related tissue dysfunction.
