#NonScience Returns, do you know it?
Review corner by Gabriella Bernardi
Nonscience returns by Brian J. Ford, an independent research biologist, author, and lecturer, who publishes on scientific issues for the general public. The first edition of this book is dated 1971, the year I was born, so the reader will forgive me if I don’t remember it. However, other people remember that it caused a sensation upon publication.
If you are a greedy, arrogant or self-centred scientist who is more interested in fame, self-promotion, and money than in science, don’t read this book. If you are a man or woman curious and interested about how a mix of knowledge and confusing language can be used as a mechanism for media exposure and make careers, then this book is a good choice!
The author is a fine satirist and enjoys with a funny parody of “Experts” that explores a world dominated by these peculiar but obiquitous figures.
At the same time, this is also a serious book that warns against the danger of a pseudo-science devoted to personal benefit and to control the masses that can be defined as the opposite of science, that is Nonscience.
