Exscalate4CoV A search for the drug in the time of the Coronavirus
The worldwide emergency of Sars-Covid has led to accomplish in a short time what is normally done in a longer time.
The pandemic emergency has brought to the forefront many topics; first and foremost vaccines, but of equal importance has been the search for effective medicines to counter the infected.
New drug development takes a long time, both because of the need to do human trials and before that to select promising molecules, but the latter can be greatly speeded up by numerical simulations that give rise to a new field, called in silico drug discovery.
The European consortium named Exscalate4CoV used European supercomputers to accelerate the finding, inside a virtual database, of the optimal protein and the relative drugs.
These simulations are based on sophisticated mathematical models that require considerable computational resources.
